CALCULATE THE BENEFIT OF RESEEDING - 12/2/2010

Using the British Seed Houses Profit Calculator, you can now put a real value on the benefits of reseeding with the best available ryegrass varieties.

For dairy cows, this simple 4-step calculator will illustrate the value of the extra milk produced per acre from the higher D-value that your reseeded sward will produce.

In the yellow Changeable Variables column:-

Step 1: Input the acres of grass reseeded in your target year.

Step 2: Input your stocking rate.

Step 3: Input the uplift in sward D-value resulting from reseeding.

As a guide, the difference between varieties at the top of the NIAB   Recommended Lists and the bottom is 5 D-value points. The difference between the best available varieties and the old sward that you are replacing could easily be 10 D-value units.
The table shows the basis upon which the additional value is calculated.

Step 4: Input your current milk price.

The Profit Calculator will now show you the increased income achievable over five years on your farm from reseeding the given area of land each year.

For beef cattle, the calculator will illustrate the value of the extra beef liveweight gain per acre from the higher D-value that your reseeded sward will produce.

Figures presented on the value of D-value are based on independent research carried out at Teagasc, AFBI (Northern Ireland) and NIAB. D-value alone does not take into account the additional benefits of using grasses with high water soluble carbohydrate contents.

Step 4: Input your estimated price per kilogram (liveweight), in pence per kg (not pounds).

The Profit Calculator will now show you the increased income achievable over five years on your farm from reseeding the given area of land each year.

For sheep, the calculator will illustrate the value of the extra lamb liveweight gain per acre from the higher D-value that your reseeded sward will produce.

The table below shows the basis upon which the additional value is calculated.

Step 4: Input your estimated price per kilogram (liveweight), in pence per kg (not pounds).

Step 5: Input the number of days that lambs will typically spend on the reseeded area during finishing.

The Profit Calculator will now show you the increased income achievable over five years on your farm from reseeding the given area of land each year.

Figures presented on the value of D-value are based on independent research carried out at Teagasc, AFBI (Northern Ireland) and NIAB. D-value alone does not take into account the additional benefits of using grasses with high water soluble carbohydrate contents.
